Hi Christina. I apologize for the late reply—been busier than in a long time. I think you have a great idea going there. It's interesting that one of the aims would be to help community organizations be able to stand on their own two feet after you have provided your services. I think the capitalist in most of us doesn't think that way (though in this case, you wouldn't be capitalizing).

But a lot of people in our organization want to contribute even though they aren't employees. There's a volunteer spirit anyway because of the way most of the organization is run, and when it comes to developing technology, some of the members want to contribute that way too. It's a noble path to take to do something when you're not looking for material benefit.

I feel that giving back to our communities - like places of worship, rescue missions, and other non-profits - is part of my purpose as a writer. I volunteer every now and then to assist with bulletins and presentation slides, but sometimes those in charge don't see the value in it.

One of my goals is to have a counterpart to my freelance business where community organizations get my services free or nearly free. The goal is to not only provide creative services, but teach others how to do it, too (something about teaching a man to fish, I think).

Great post...thanks!

I appreciate this piece so much! I'm a Technical Writing major at Utah State University. My dream job is to work for the LDS church as a technical writer, and I'm currently doing a research on that for an empirical research report. If you have some time, I'd love to ask you some questions as a source for my report. Please email me or comment on my blog if you are interested. Thank you!
