At the risk of not knowing what I'm talking about, I'm going to reply without yet having looked at the MBTI. I hadn't thought about the possibility of being detail oriented in some areas to the exclusion of others. But I admit that there are times I just shrug my shoulders about little things, but I'm doggedly persistent about making other things just so. I have a colleague who, when reviewing my work, sometimes points out things that aren't wrong but, she says, look a little inconsistent or like accidents. Sometimes I don't think these things are a big deal, but I hadn't thought that perhaps there is a personality factor in this.

Putting my hand up to join the perfectionist/detail-oriented crowd! Brian O'Donnell spoke about the Myers Briggs Type Indicators (MBTI) at the ASTC (NSW) Conference last weekend in Sydney, Australia. (see http://cybertext.wordpress.com/2008/10/31/astc-nsw-conference-2008-day-1/)

Based on his MBTI lists, I figured I was an ESTJ or ISTJ. He later said -- after he'd seen my very detailed presentation -- that I was more likely an ISTJ. He also showed us stats on engineering students that showed that most were in particular groupings of MBTI types. My guess would be that technical communicators would also cluster around a particular grouping of types.
