I've done a lot of short-term single-writer contract projects where the developers were not used to working with a tech writer. I've always tried to get my hands on as much project and product documentaion as possible, so I could review it and get a more complete understanding of the project, the development environment, etc., before I started asking specific questions. I found that when I demonstrated a basic understanding of the project, and that I respected the developers' time and resource limitations, they were more cooperative in providing the answers I needed to complete the documentation I was working on.

There it is. I guess I forgot to check it first, and it figures that the time I forget is the time something goes wrong. :)

OR

Get involved in the creation of some of the documents, that way you'll get the knowledge first hand and can be the user advocate in any discussions.

P.S. Bit of a glitch in the styling somewhere in this post
